Children are in charge in London
London is not only a romantic and interesting city for adults, but also has plenty to see and do for children. Before you know it, you and your family will suddenly find yourselves standing in front of The Leaky Cauldron, the magician’s pub from the Harry Potter story. In London, you’re surrounded by teddy bears and dollhouses one moment and cruising down the Thames in an amphibious vehicle the next.
Teddy bears and cars
Visiting a museum when on holiday with the entire family is not always popular with every member of the family. But there are plenty of museums in London where children can also have their share of fun. The Fitzrovia district, for example, is home to Pollock’s Toy Museum, originally established by Benjamin Pollock, an entrepreneur who sold paper mini theatres in the 19th century. The theatres still exist, but the charming building is primarily filled with old toys. From dolls from China, teddy bears and dollhouses to old board games – you’ll find them all here. Charles Dickens lived in the same neighbourhood and wrote such famous books as ‘Oliver Twist’ and ‘A Christmas Carol’ in a typical English house with a light blue front door. That house, currently a museum, has 2 special routes for children with assignments and quiz questions about the famous writer. In the basement, a film is shown about Dickens’ life. Tip: go on Wednesday, when the children can also touch Dickens’ personal toys.
Outside!
If your children have read all of J.K. Rowlings' Harry Potter books, they will certainly enjoy a guided tour of filming locations. London Walks organises tours with a guide who gets you into a magical mood and takes you to such locations as the Gringotts Bank and Platform 9¾. Your kids will never have so much fun on a walking tour!
